Project 2: Freaks Among Us
Thinking Skill: Perspective
Art:
For my Art portion of my project I photoshopped side show actors or "Freaks" over Norman Rockwell painting to show how normal they were there physical appearance is what made them seem lie they were weird. An example is the photo above.
English:
For my English portion I wrote an essay that was about how being weird isn't that weird and its normal. Here is the first paragraph of my essay:
In today's society no one is normal. We all feel like we’re normal people but we all have our quirks which makes us all unique. For example Emerson Grimes said, “ I used to be obsessed with clam chowder and I would eat it every day , but now I really like eating octopus”. Cristian Garris said, “I can pick up 90% of objects with my toes”. Conner McCaffrey said, “People think I’m weird for eating clams”. Autumn Myers said, “I have bumps under my eyes that are genetic”. Nick O’mararrah said, “I’m double jointed I can touch my forearm with all my fingers at the same time”. The fact is we are all weird in this freak show of life.
Social Studies:
For my social studies portion of my project I wrote an essay that talks about how side show actors or "freaks" were treated in the 1800s and how in 1990 the ADA was created to prevent discrimination against people with disabilities. Then it talks about how side show actors are treated today after the ADA law was passed. Here is the first paragraph from my essay:
In the mid-16th century, freak shows became a popular pastimes in England. Deformities were eventually treated as objects of interest and entertainment. There were treated unfairly and discriminated constantly for their appearance. But in today’s society such acts would be looked down upon because of certain laws set in place such as the Americans with Disabilities Act. This law prohibits discrimination of people with disabilities. In “freak shows” in our modern era there have been significant changes in how a freak show is ran and how the audience treats the actors.
